From a village non-profit to India's first microfinance universal bank
In short: How does a small village NGO transform into a massive financial institution? Bandhan Bank’s evolution from a microfinance lender to a universal bank represents a unique shift in Indian banking, moving from individual lending in rural pockets to a nationwide infrastructure serving the country's unbanked populations.
Bandhan Bank began its journey in 2001 as a not-for-profit entity dedicated to financial inclusion and women's empowerment. Its initial operations were humble, starting in Bagnan, a small village roughly 60 km from Kolkata. The organization utilized a microfinance model characterized by individual lending facilitated through group formation, specifically targeting underbanked and underpenetrated markets.
The institution scaled rapidly, acquiring a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) in 2006 to create Bandhan Financial Services Private Limited (BFSPL). By 2010, it had secured its position as the largest microfinance institution in India. This growth paved the way for a historic milestone in June 2015, when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted it a banking license, making it the first microfinance institution in the country to become a universal bank.
The transition to a universal bank was officially inaugurated in Kolkata on August 23, 2015, by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Despite this success, the bank faced regulatory hurdles; in September 2018, the RBI barred it from opening new branches without approval and froze the CEO's salary because the bank failed to reduce promoter shareholding to the required 40% within three years. To rectify this and expand its reach, the bank merged GRUH Finance in 2019, moving into affordable housing finance.
Today, Bandhan Bank is a major player in the Indian private sector. It operates in 35 out of 36 states and union territories, with nearly 6,400 banking outlets. Notably, 73% of its branches are located in rural and semi-urban areas, maintaining its original focus on inclusive banking while managing a massive portfolio of deposits and advances as of mid-2026.
