How a local municipal corporator rose to become India's Minister of State for Home Affairs
In short: Bandi Sanjay Kumar began his political journey as a municipal representative in Karimnagar. After years of grassroots organizing and multiple electoral defeats, his 2019 parliamentary victory marked a historic shift for his party in Telangana. Today, he serves as a key figure in India's federal government and national political leadership.
Born in 1971, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from age twelve. His early career was defined by extensive organizational work, including leadership roles within the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and a 35-day campaign during the 1996 Rath Yatra. He transitioned to formal governance in 2005, serving as a municipal corporator for Karimnagar's 48th division for fourteen years.
Kumar's path to national prominence was not linear. He faced unsuccessful bids for the state assembly in 2014 and 2018. His breakthrough arrived in the 2019 general election, where he won the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 89,508 votes. This victory was notable for overcoming established opponents and securing one of only four seats for his party in Telangana, a region where the organization previously lacked significant electoral strength.
His career has been marked by both high-level appointments and legal challenges. After serving as the head of his party's state unit in Telangana from March 2020 to July 2023, he was named a National General Secretary. In June 2024, he assumed his current role as Minister of State for Home Affairs. His tenure has also involved public controversy, including a 2023 arrest regarding a state examination paper leak. However, in November 2025, the Telangana High Court quashed the FIR, concluding that he had no direct involvement in the matter.
Beyond legislative duties, Kumar has engaged in high-profile crisis management. In August 2025, he coordinated with the Defence Minister to secure Indian Air Force support for the rescue of five farmers trapped by rising waters in the Maneru stream. This event highlighted his influence in mobilizing federal resources to address local emergencies in his home district.
