How a swampy delta became a futuristic crossroads of tradition

Bangkok Unveiled: Tradition in a Futuristic City | Documentary - AMP · 51:06 · Video: GO Asia · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the duality of Bangkok, a city that balances rapid modernization with deep ancestral roots. This documentary examines how the "City of Angels" transitioned from a strategically fortified river settlement into a vital Southeast Asian hub.

In 1782, Rama I established the city's roots by relocating the Siamese royal seat across the Chao Phraya River to its eastern side. Strategic advantages influenced the site selection: a broad river curve provided a moat, and the Sea of Mud, a marshy delta, shielded the eastern flank. The early layout was modeled after the former capital of Ayutthaya.

Early development focused on massive fortifications and religious centers. A primary city wall, measuring 4.5 miles long and 10 feet thick, enclosed 1.5 square miles of land. While the river and canals served as the primary roadways for centuries, the city has evolved into a modern metropolis that maintains its distinctive cultural identity and historical wats, which once functioned as hospitals, schools, and libraries.
