In short: In 1901, the city of Bay Minette took matters into its own hands to claim its status as the Baldwin County seat. After the Alabama legislature authorized the move from Daphne, local citizens bypassed legal resistance by physically relocating the county records under the cover of darkness.

The history of the Baldwin County seat is marked by several relocations. Initially, the seat was located at McIntosh Bluff on the Tombigbee River. It moved to the town of Blakeley in 1810, and later to the city of Daphne in 1868. When the Alabama legislature authorized a move to Bay Minette in 1900, the city of Daphne refused to comply. This led to the decisive action on the night of October 11–12, 1901, when citizens of Bay Minette retrieved the records from Daphne in the middle of the night, effectively establishing their city as the permanent seat.

Located in southern Alabama, Bay Minette sits on high ground between the Mobile/Tensaw River valley and the Perdido River, which forms the border with Florida. The city was not officially incorporated until 1907. Today, it serves as a hub for the surrounding area, functioning as part of the Daphne–Fairhope–Foley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city's unique history was later memorialized in a 1937 post office mural painted by Hilton Leech, commissioned by the WPA.

Beyond its administrative role, the city has maintained a presence in popular culture, with scenes from films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood shot in or near the area. In 2011, the city made headlines for a controversial proposal known as Operation Restore Our Community, which sought to allow misdemeanor offenders to replace jail time with mandatory church attendance. The program was ultimately challenged for violating the separation of church and state and was subsequently abandoned.
