How a small one-room agency became a global powerhouse of modern advertising history
In short: Born in 1891 as a one-man operation, BBDO evolved into a global advertising titan. From pioneering radio broadcasting to inventing the brainstorming technique, the agency shaped the way brands communicate. Discover the history of the firm that redefined consumer culture and navigated the high-stakes world of corporate image-making.
The agency traces its roots to 1891, when George Batten opened a single-room office in New York City with no clients and one employee. By 1928, a pivotal merger between the George Batten Company and the Barton, Durstine & Osborn agency created the entity known today as BBDO. This new firm quickly established itself as a creative force, moving into the Knapp building on Madison Avenue, where it would remain for 59 years. Throughout the 20th century, the agency became a laboratory for industry-defining practices, including the 1935 launch of the first 'Hit Parade' radio show and the introduction of 'brainstorming' by Alex Osborn in 1940.
BBDO’s influence extended beyond mere promotion, often shifting how the public perceived major corporations. In 1935, the agency was tasked with rebranding DuPont, transforming its image from a wartime munitions manufacturer to a peace-time innovator with the famous slogan 'Better Things for Better Living … Through Chemistry.' Later, in 1963, the agency pioneered lifestyle-based marketing with the 'Pepsi Generation' campaign, marking the first time a product was promoted based on the attitudes of its consumers rather than the product's own attributes. These strategies cemented the agency's reputation, leading to numerous 'Network of the Year' awards from industry publications.
The agency’s history is also marked by high-profile moments and internal evolution. In 1984, a commercial for Pepsi became global news when Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire during filming. Internally, the firm saw significant leadership shifts, such as Ben Duffy’s tenure, during which billings quadrupled to $200 million in a decade. Today, as part of the Omnicom Group, BBDO operates a vast network of 289 offices across 81 countries, employing over 15,000 people. Its legacy remains a cornerstone of advertising, having navigated decades of changing media landscapes from early radio programs to the complexities of modern global branding.
