Why Belize built a brand new capital city in the middle of the jungle
In short: After a devastating 1961 hurricane nearly wiped out the coastal capital of Belize City, the government sought a safer, inland location. The result was Belmopan, a planned city designed to withstand storm surges, which today serves as the administrative heart of the nation and a unique architectural landmark.
Following the destruction of approximately 75% of Belize City by Hurricane Hattie in 1961, the government identified the need for a capital on higher, more stable terrain. In 1962, a committee selected a site 82 kilometres southwest of the old port. Construction commenced in 1967, and by 1970, administrative functions had officially relocated to the new city.
The city was named by combining the names of two local waterways: the Belize River and the Mopan River. Its design is centered around a Ring Road, with the National Assembly Building serving as the focal point. This structure features grey stone and broad steps, intentionally crafted to mimic the appearance of a Pre-Columbian Maya temple, reflecting the country's cultural heritage.
Initially, foreign governments were hesitant to move their embassies to the inland location, doubting its viability as a true capital. However, the British High Commission opened in 1981, and the United States followed with its own chancery in 2006. Today, Belmopan remains the smallest national capital in the continental Americas by population, with 20,754 residents as of 2022.
While the city was originally managed by the Reconstruction and Development Corporation, residents voted in 1999 to transition to a directly elected city council. Today, the local economy is heavily tied to the government, with many inhabitants employed in administrative or technical roles within the cluster of buildings surrounding the National Assembly.
