In short: Known historically as the Clam Wharf for its pearl trade, Bengbu has transformed into a modern industrial powerhouse. Today, this Anhui province hub dominates the display technology market, mass-producing the ultra-thin glass essential for the world's most advanced foldable mobile devices, while remaining a vital center for regional food production.

Located along the Huai River in northern Anhui, Bengbu occupies a unique position as a climatic transition zone between northern and southern China. Its name, meaning Clam Wharf, reflects a past defined by freshwater pearl fisheries. Today, the city serves as a critical distribution center for the Huai basin, bolstered by its status as a major transit hub on the high-speed rail line connecting Beijing and Shanghai.

The city's industrial identity has shifted significantly toward high-tech manufacturing. While food-related industries still represent 44 percent of its industrial output, Bengbu is the only location in China capable of manufacturing the entire spectrum of glass required for the display industry. This includes specialized touch-sensitive glass measuring just 0.12 millimeters in thickness and flexible, foldable glass sheets as thin as 30 microns, both of which are produced at scale within the city.

Beyond its industrial output, Bengbu maintains a rich historical and cultural profile. Archaeological excavations conducted between 2005 and 2008 near Fengyang uncovered royal tombs belonging to the ancient Zhongli State, a member of the Huaiyi Confederation. The region's history is marked by the assimilation of the Dongyi peoples and a decisive 1948 victory for the People's Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War. In recent years, the city has also gained international attention, notably through the 2010 documentary film The Warriors of Qiugang, which highlighted local environmental challenges.

Bengbu continues to evolve its infrastructure to support its growing population of over 3.2 million residents. Recent developments include the opening of the Bengbu Tenghu Airport in April 2026 and ongoing efforts to expand urban transit. As a culinary destination, the city is celebrated for its regional specialties, including Huaiyuan pomegranates and Wuhe crabs, which reflect the broader agricultural bounty of the surrounding Anhui landscape.
