In short: Once a strategic French conquest and later a pivotal hub during the Vietnam War, Biên Hòa has transformed into a massive industrial center. Though it recently ceased to exist as a formal municipal city, its legacy as a gateway to the south remains etched in its landscape and complex history.

Situated northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Biên Hòa has long served as a vital connection point in southern Vietnam. Its history is deeply marked by the 1861 French capture of the area, which helped inaugurate nearly a century of colonial dominance. By the mid-20th century, the city became a significant destination for refugees fleeing the north, shaping its identity as a center of resistance and a major suburb of the former capital, Saigon.

The city’s landscape bears the heavy scars of the Vietnam War. It hosted the massive Biên Hòa Air Base, which served as a primary storage site for Agent Orange and remains the country's largest dioxin hotspot today. Furthermore, the city is home to the Biên Hòa Military Cemetery, a site of profound historical significance for the fallen soldiers of the former Republic of Vietnam, currently undergoing restoration efforts.

Following the economic stagnation that gripped the nation after 1975, the introduction of the Đổi Mới reforms in 1986 catalyzed a dramatic shift. Biên Hòa evolved into an industrial powerhouse, attracting substantial foreign investment from countries like Japan, Switzerland, and Singapore. Today, it hosts numerous industrial zones, including the country’s oldest, and features modern infrastructure like the Sonadezi Building and the Universe Complex, reflecting its rapid modernization.

As of July 1, 2025, Biên Hòa underwent a significant administrative change, ceasing to exist as a municipal city and becoming part of the Đồng Nai Province. Despite this shift in status, the region remains a critical economic hub, defined by its blend of ancient historical relics, such as the Trấn Biên Literature Temple, and its ongoing role as a center for industrial manufacturing and transport.
