The self-taught guitarist who mastered the notes without a single formal lesson
In short: Before he was a BRIT Award-winning producer, Bernard Butler was a teenager in North London, teaching himself to play along to The Smiths. From playing violin on buses to defining the Britpop era with Suede, his journey is a masterclass in musical intuition and prolific collaboration.
Born in North London to Irish parents, Butler’s early musical life was shaped by the migration patterns of the 1960s. While he spent summers in Dún Laoghaire, his childhood was immersed in an Irish community in Britain. His formal training began at age eight with the violin—an instrument that famously made him a target for bullying on the bus—but his true passion emerged through a 'terrible electric guitar' left behind by his brothers. He was the youngest of three boys, and his eldest brother was the one who first sparked his musical interest.
Without any formal guitar lessons, Butler developed his proficiency by meticulously learning The Smiths' parts note-by-note. This self-taught foundation propelled him to fame in 1992 as the guitarist for Suede. Alongside songwriter Brett Anderson, he helped craft iconic albums like the 1993 self-titled debut and 1994's Dog Man Star, before departing the band mid-recording. His musical education was deeply influenced by the BBC radio presenter John Peel, whose broadcasts introduced him to the music of The Smiths. He eventually studied history at Queen Mary University of London, though he left the course when he was 19.
Butler's career is defined by an extraordinary breadth of collaboration. As a producer, he contributed to Duffy's Grammy-winning album Rockferry, which was the UK's best-selling album of 2008. His work spans genres and eras, from forming the duo McAlmont & Butler to producing for artists like The Libertines, Pet Shop Boys, and Kate Nash. Whether through improvisational sets in Sunderland or composing soundtracks for film, Butler remains a central, versatile figure in British music history. His versatility extends to the radio, where he has hosted the weekly show BB & The King since 2017. He also serves as a resident lecturer for the songwriting degree program at BIMM University in London.
