From bicycles to global telecom: the evolution of an Indian giant
In short: In 1976, Bharti Enterprises began by manufacturing bicycles. Today, it is a multinational conglomerate ranking among the world's top two mobile network operators by subscriber count. This transformation from local manufacturing to global telecommunications infrastructure highlights a massive diversification strategy spanning across continents.
Founded in 1976 by Sunil Bharti Mittal and his two siblings, Bharti Enterprises initially focused on bicycle manufacturing before pivoting toward the telecommunications sector in 1995. This shift laid the groundwork for its flagship company, Bharti Airtel. Currently a major player, this firm serves over 18 nations throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, while holding the position of India's second biggest integrated telecom provider regarding its total user count.
The group’s growth has been defined by strategic infrastructure plays and high-value acquisitions. In 2007, Bharti Infratel was established to provide shared telecom towers—becoming the first Indian company to do so. This eventually merged with Indus Towers in November 2020, creating one of the world's largest mobile tower operators. By June 2024, Bharti Airtel also became a direct owner of Indus Towers after acquiring Vodafone's entire stake.
Beyond telecom, the conglomerate has diversified into hospitality, insurance, and real estate. It operates high-profile restaurant partnerships like PizzaExpress and Chili's in India through Gourmet Investments. Its reach even extends to space and global tech; it holds a 50% stake in OneWeb for satellite internet and recently completed a 24.5% stake acquisition in the British telecommunications company BT Group in December 2024.
The group also maintains a significant philanthropic footprint through the Bharti Foundation, which runs over 250 schools serving more than 45,000 rural children for free. This balance of aggressive commercial expansion—ranging from mobile networks to international restaurant chains—and large-scale social investment characterizes its modern corporate identity.
