The app that bypasses wallets to move money directly between bank accounts
In short: Unlike many popular mobile wallets that hold your funds, the BHIM app acts as a pure mechanism for instant transfers. Launched in 2016, this state-owned tool leverages India's banking infrastructure to enable seamless, 24/7 digital payments, even during bank holidays and weekends.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) is built upon the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure. This architecture allows for nearly instantaneous transfers between 170 member banks. While many users associate mobile payments with digital wallets like Paytm or M-Pesa, BHIM functions differently; it does not hold user money but instead facilitates direct movement between existing bank accounts.
The app's reach has expanded significantly since its launch on 30 December 2016. By October 2021, the BHIM UPI platform had processed over 4.2 billion digital transactions, reaching a value of $100 billion (₹7.71 lakh crore). Its utility is not limited to India; Bhutan became the first country to adopt BHIM UPI for digital transactions following approval from the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan.
The platform has faced significant security scrutiny. In May 2020, the cybersecurity firm VPNMentor reported a massive data breach involving approximately 7.26 million Indian users. The leak, which included sensitive data like Aadhaar and PAN card details, originated from a misconfigured AWS S3 bucket on a CSC-operated website rather than the official BHIM site. While Indian officials denied the leak, experts confirmed the authenticity of the 4.09 GB of leaked files.
Looking forward, BHIM is evolving through open-source models and new features. On 9 November 2022, the NPCI announced an open-source license model for the app, allowing regulated financial entities to utilize its source code. Furthermore, the app is slated to join the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to compete with major players like Google Pay and PhonePe.
