The 93-year-old soldier who mastered the art of vanishing into history
In short: Billy Waugh spent over five decades in the shadows, conducting clandestine operations for the U.S. Army and the CIA. From the jungles of Vietnam to tracking global terrorists in Sudan, his career was defined by high-altitude jumps and unconventional warfare—a life of secrets that only recently began to surface.
Billy Waugh's career was a masterclass in irregular warfare. He joined the U.S. Army in 1948 and quickly transitioned into Special Forces, earning his Green Beret in 1954. While fighting in Vietnam, he was part of the prestigious MACV-SOG, performing the military's inaugural high altitude-low opening (HALO) jump during active combat. By the time he retired from active duty in 1972, he had already earned eight Purple Hearts and a Silver Star for his actions in combat.
His transition to intelligence work in 1977 marked a shift into deep-cover operations. While working for the CIA's Special Activities Division, Waugh engaged in high-stakes surveillance and tracking. In the 1990s, he was stationed in Khartoum, Sudan, specifically tasked with tracking notorious terrorist leaders including Carlos the Jackal and Osama bin Laden.
Even at the age of 71, Waugh remained on the front lines, joining ODA 594 during the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan to fight Taliban and al-Qaeda forces at the Battle of Tora Bora. What makes Waugh's trajectory unique is the sheer longevity of his involvement in clandestine work. Despite his age, he continued to serve as a contractor and officer until his retirement in 2005. His life was a bridge between the era of traditional special operations and the modern war on terror. Following his death in 2023, his remains were scattered via a final HALO jump over North Carolina, a symbolic end to a career spent perfecting the art of rapid, undetected insertion into hostile territory.
