Can a video game be a cinematic masterpiece while sacrificing traditional player control?
In short: Beyond: Two Souls, a 2013 action-adventure title, challenged the gaming industry by prioritizing interactive storytelling over mechanical skill. Featuring performances by Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe, the game blurred the lines between film and software, sparking intense debate about whether its cinematic ambitions ultimately undermined the player's agency.
Developed by Quantic Dream and directed by David Cage, Beyond: Two Souls follows Jodie Holmes, a woman linked since birth to an incorporeal entity named Aiden. The game utilizes advanced motion-capture technology to translate the performances of its lead actors into a digital environment. Its narrative, spanning Jodie’s life from adolescence to adulthood, was captured in a script of approximately 2,000 pages, a scale Cage described as insane compared to standard film screenplays.
The gameplay mechanics reflect a deliberate departure from traditional skill-based gaming. Players guide Jodie through environments, interacting with objects via controller prompts, while switching to Aiden allows for traversal through walls and manipulation of the physical world. Despite these innovations, the game received polarized reviews. Critics lauded the emotional depth and technical fidelity, with some calling it a visionary work, while others criticized the experience as overly passive, arguing that the narrative often proceeded regardless of player input.
The project’s ambition was matched by its financial scale, with a production budget of $27 million, excluding $18 million for marketing. By July 2018, the title had sold 2.8 million copies, cementing its status as a significant, if controversial, entry in the PlayStation 3 library. Beyond its commercial performance, the game remains a focal point for discussions on the future of interactive media, as Page’s production company, Pageboy Productions, announced plans in January 2025 to adapt the story into a television series.
