From house painter to country music titan: the rise of Blake Shelton
In short: Before he became a household name as a television coach, Blake Shelton was a teenager in Nashville painting houses to make ends meet. His journey from an aspiring songwriter in Oklahoma to a chart-topping country star and media personality reveals the grit behind his polished, baritone-led success in the industry.
Born in Ada, Oklahoma, in 1976, Shelton began his musical pursuits early, writing songs by his teenage years. His path to Nashville was paved by the encouragement of songwriter Mae Boren Axton, who recognized his potential during a high school performance. Shortly after graduation in 1994, Shelton moved to Tennessee, where he initially supported himself through manual labor while navigating the music industry. His breakthrough arrived in 1997 when he connected with producer Bobby Braddock, eventually securing a recording contract.
Shelton’s professional ascent was defined by his 2001 debut single, 'Austin.' The song, structured as a series of answering-machine messages, quickly climbed to the top of the country charts. Despite the closure of his initial label, Giant Records, his momentum continued under Warner Brothers. Over the following two decades, he released a string of successful albums, including 'The Dreamer' and 'Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill.' By 2019, his single 'God’s Country' marked a career peak, dominating the country charts for seven weeks and earning critical recognition through a Grammy nomination.
Beyond his recording career, Shelton expanded his influence through television. He served as a coach on the reality competition 'The Voice' from 2011 until 2023, a role that significantly broadened his audience. His career has also encompassed executive production work and film appearances, including a turn as Wyatt Earp in 'The Ridiculous 6.' In 2024, he transitioned to a new label, BBR Music Group, continuing his creative output with fresh collaborations and concert tours, marking a sustained evolution in a career that began with humble roots in the Oklahoma music scene.
