From Rania to Blackswan: A decade of K-pop identity shifts and management turbulence
In short: The South Korean girl group Blackswan is the final iteration of a project that began in 2011 as Rania. Over thirteen years, the group navigated constant member turnover, multiple rebrandings, and failed international expansion attempts, ultimately evolving into a multinational act under the management of DR Music.
The group's origins trace back to 2010, when DR Music planned to launch the third generation of Baby V.O.X. Instead, they debuted in April 2011 as Rania with a seven-member lineup. Their initial release, composed by Teddy Riley, sparked immediate controversy in South Korea due to perceived provocative imagery, forcing the label to alter their choreography and costumes. Despite early ambitions for an American debut, the group faced repeated delays, internal disputes with management, and a revolving door of members that persisted for years.
By 2016, the group rebranded as BP Rania, an acronym for Black Pearl Rania, intended to highlight the darker skin tone of new member Alexandra Reid. Reid, the first black woman to join an official South Korean girl group, faced public scrutiny regarding her participation in choreography, which the label and the artist disputed through conflicting public statements. This period was marked by financial complications, including a failed crowdfunding project on Makestar that resulted in full refunds to fans after the label became unreachable.
The transition to the name Blackswan occurred in October 2020 with the album Goodbye Rania. This evolution followed a decade of instability, including the departure of original members and failed attempts to expand into markets like the United States and Romania. The group's history is defined by its struggle for consistent support; by 2021, the lineup had shifted again, with members like Hyeme departing following a high-profile financial scandal involving 50 million KRW. Today, the group continues as a multinational entity, reflecting a long, turbulent journey from its origins as a domestic pop project.
