The teen idol who inadvertently helped shape the sound of The Beatles
In short: Before the British Invasion changed music forever, Bobby Rydell was a dominant force on the American charts. While his popularity eventually declined, his influence remained: Paul McCartney admits that the songwriting process for the iconic 'She Loves You' was sparked by the melodies of Rydell's hits.
Born Robert Louis Ridarelli in 1942, the Philadelphia-raised singer rose to fame as a premier teen idol of the early 1960s. His career was defined by a string of massive successes on the Billboard Hot 100, including 'Wild One', 'Volare', and 'Swingin' School'. At his peak, it is estimated he sold over 25 million records, with several singles and his debut album achieving million-selling status.
Rydell's influence extended even to the architects of the British Invasion. While popular legend often credits other tracks, biographer Bob Spitz notes that Paul McCartney originally modeled the Beatles' 'She Loves You' on Rydell's 'Swingin' School'. McCartney has also recounted how the very concept of the 'answering song'—the 'yeah, yeah, yeah' hook—was an idea born from listening to Rydell's work.
Despite the arrival of bands like The Beatles causing a dramatic decline in his popularity, Rydell maintained a prolific career. He transitioned into acting, notably appearing in the 1963 film 'Bye Bye Birdie', a role specifically expanded for him. He also became a fixture on American television, appearing on programs such as 'The Red Skelton Show' and 'The Joey Bishop Show'.
His legacy is preserved in both pop culture and his hometown. The high school in the musical 'Grease' was named 'Rydell High' in his honor, and a street in Philadelphia was renamed Bobby Rydell Boulevard. Even after his death in 2022, plans were announced to erect a statue of the singer in Wildwood, New Jersey, a community immortalized by his hit 'Wildwood Days'.
