How a massive freight network powers the American economy from behind the scenes
In short: BNSF Railway is the largest freight railroad in the United States, operating a sprawling network that spans 28 states. Owned by Berkshire Hathaway, this logistics giant connects the nation through transcontinental routes, moving everything from coal and grain to Boeing 737 fuselages across thousands of miles of track.
The BNSF Railway of today is the product of a complex consolidation history. Its roots trace back to 1849 with the formation of the Aurora Branch Railroad in Illinois. Over the next century and a half, dozens of regional lines merged, most notably the 1995 formation of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe holding company. This entity combined the Burlington Northern Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, two of the era's largest rail systems. The merger was finalized in 1996, and in 2010, the company was taken private by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in a $44 billion deal.
BNSF’s infrastructure is vast, encompassing over 33,400 miles of track and 8,000 locomotives. The network is divided into two regions and ten operating divisions, managed from a centralized center in Fort Worth, Texas. Beyond its own tracks, BNSF holds rights on more than 8,000 miles of competitor-owned lines, allowing it to operate trains across a massive footprint. This reach is essential for its role as a top transporter of intermodal freight, which includes containers and trailers moving from major ports to inland hubs.
The company continues to expand its capacity through strategic investments. In 2022, it acquired Montana Rail Link for $2 billion, integrating its operations in 2024. Furthermore, BNSF is currently developing the Barstow International Gateway in California, a $1.5 billion master-planned facility designed to streamline the movement of goods from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. These projects reflect the railroad's focus on maintaining its competitive edge in a duopoly that defines freight logistics across the Western and Midwestern United States.
