The first Motown hit that broke the British radio barrier
In short: In 1962, a girl group's debut single became an unlikely cultural bridge. Before the Beatles were global superstars, they were secretly exporting the Detroit 'Motown sound' to the UK—a musical revolution sparked by a song about a letter from a boyfriend.
Released in August 1961 on the Tamla label, "Please Mr. Postman" was the debut single for the Marvelettes (originally known as the Marvels). It became a landmark success: Motown's first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and its second million-selling record. The track was built through multiple layers of revision. Georgia Dobbins originally brought a blues song by William Garrett to an audition; after she left the group, producer Berry Gordy tasked the songwriting team "Brianbert" (Brian Holland and Robert Bateman) with reworking it again, involving Detroit postman Freddie Gorman in the final polish.
The song's technical construction is rooted in a common I–vi–IV–V chord progression played in 44 time. While its melody is hexatonic and avoids "blue" notes, its production was sophisticated for the era. Marvin Gaye, then working as a session musician after his own debut album failed commercially, provided the busy backbeat on drums. The recording also featured prominent handclaps and an electric rhythm guitar buried in the mix. Its success was so significant that it led to an expansion of Motown's output, including hits by the Miracles.
The song’s legacy is defined by its high-profile covers. In 1963, The Beatles recorded a version for their second UK album. Though they were unaware at the time, their performance on BBC Radio in March 1962 marked the first time any Tamla song reached British listeners. While critics debate the cover's quality—some praising its "reckless" rock 'n' roll energy and others finding it heavy compared to the original—it remains a pivotal moment in music history. The song achieved another number-one peak decades later in 1975 with a version by The Carpenters.
