A Lego collection dispute spiraled into a national legal battle and viral internet crusade.
In short: When a consignment deal for a Star Wars Lego collection went sour in Oregon, YouTuber Reckless Ben turned the incident into a high-stakes investigation. The resulting conflict between the Bricks & Minifigs franchise, local police, and online activists triggered lawsuits, arrests, and a massive wave of public scrutiny across the country.
The controversy began in 2023 when 83-year-old Ed Mansell consigned his extensive Star Wars Lego collection to a Bricks & Minifigs (BAM) store in Keizer, Oregon. Following a change in franchise ownership in November 2024, Mansell’s family alleged that the new operators refused to return unsold inventory. While the family estimated the collection’s value at $150,000 to $200,000, internal store records suggested a lower valuation between $85,000 and $120,000. BAM corporate initially claimed the collection was worth significantly less, between $60,000 and $80,000.
In May 2026, YouTuber Benjamin 'Reckless Ben' Schneider began documenting the dispute, alleging that BAM corporate and the American Fork Police Department in Utah were acting improperly. Schneider’s tactics included publicity stunts like posing as a delivery driver to serve legal papers and creating a mock business. These actions led to his arrest on charges including stalking and trespassing. Schneider claimed police misconduct, while the department maintained its actions were lawful, even accidentally releasing unredacted body camera footage that fueled further online speculation.
The fallout was widespread. BAM faced intense public backlash, with some franchises reporting harassment and death threats. Corporate eventually severed ties with the Keizer store operators and reached a resolution with the Mansell family in August 2026, returning the Lego sets. Meanwhile, the former Keizer owners filed their own lawsuit against BAM for fraud and breach of contract. As of late 2026, civil litigation and mediation efforts between the various parties, including Schneider, remained ongoing, highlighting the volatile intersection of social media activism and traditional legal disputes.
