The director behind the Oscar-winning drama Driving Miss Daisy
In short: Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford is renowned for crafting intimate, character-driven stories. His career spans over 50 years and 30 feature films, highlighted by a historic Academy Award win for Best Picture that bridged the gap between Off-Broadway theater and cinematic excellence.
Born in Paddington, New South Wales, on August 16, 1940, Beresford began his career during the Australian New Wave. During his youth, he produced brief movies such as The Hunter (1959) and pursued English studies at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1964. Before finding international success, he faced professional hurdles, including a stint working as an editor in Enugu, Nigeria, for two years, and a period in England where he struggled to break into the British film scene.
Beresford's most significant commercial and critical milestone came in 1989 with the release of Driving Miss Daisy. Adapted from Alfred Uhry's play—which was inspired by the real-life relationship between Uhry's grandmother, Lena Fox, and her chauffeur, Will Coleman—the film became a rare success story. No other film based on an Off-Broadway production has secured the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film also secured three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Comedy or Musical, and earned accolades for its lead actors, Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy.
Throughout a career that includes notable works like Breaker Morant (1980) and Tender Mercies (1983), Beresford has specialized in small-budget, character-focused dramas. His technical mastery has been recognized through numerous nominations and awards, including two AACTA/AFI Awards for Best Direction and two for Best Screenplay. His filmography is diverse, ranging from his first feature, The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972), to later works like Mao's Last Dancer (2009) and Ladies in Black (2018).
