In short: In 1998, Looking Glass Studios released a game that challenged the dominance of the first-person shooter. By using light and sound as core mechanics, Thief: The Dark Project introduced a new way to play: not by shooting, but by hiding in the shadows and moving silently.

Released in 1998, Thief: The Dark Project was a landmark title for Microsoft Windows. Released by Eidos Interactive and created by Looking Glass Studios, this title featured intricate simulation and AI mechanics that fostered emergent playstyles. Rather than focusing on combat, the game utilized a first-person perspective to facilitate non-confrontational play, leading the developers to describe it as a "first-person sneaker." This influential title was later followed by an expanded edition called Thief Gold. The series eventually continued with two sequels and a later reboot.

The game's mechanics centered on environmental awareness. Players control Garrett, a master thief, and must manage visibility and noise. A gem-shaped meter on the HUD indicates how visible the player is to NPCs; staying in dark, shady spots keeps the gem dim and the player hidden. Sound is equally critical; walking on soft surfaces like grass or carpet is quiet, whereas metal or ceramic tiles produce significant noise that can alert guards, servants, or non-human entities like zombies and ghosts. To assist with objectives, players can use various tools like lockpicks or flashbombs. They can also acquire different types of arrows, such as moss or fire arrows, to manipulate the environment.

The setting, a metropolis known as the City, blends elements of the Middle Ages with the Industrial Revolution, often described as steampunk. The environment is divided among factions like the Hammerites, who value order and craftsmanship, and the Pagans, who worship the Trickster and value the natural world. This atmosphere is further enriched by the game's ability to reveal its world through found notes and overheard conversations, making the player an active participant in uncovering the City's lore. The City is home to the secretive Keepers, a neutral faction striving for balance. This complex social structure is reflected in the distinct architecture of each group.
