Resurrecting a medieval masterpiece with 20th-century industrial power
In short: Discover how a ruined 12th-century mountain fortress was transformed into a symbol of modern power. This documentary explores the engineering feat of rebuilding the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg in just seven years.
The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, located at an altitude of 750 meters in the Vosges mountains, served as a strategic target throughout history. In 1901, architect Bodo Ebhart was commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II of Prussia to give the ruin new life as a symbol of modernity and power.
The reconstruction was a massive undertaking that utilized advanced technology for its time. Workers used electric cranes, a locomotive hauled up the mountain, and mobile pivoting baskets to dig into the mountain and erect the bastion. The project successfully transformed the site into a legendary castle by the early 20th century.
