In short: Located along the Persian Gulf, Bushehr province is a vital hub for Iran's naval operations and energy exports. From its historical struggle against Portuguese occupation to its modern role as the site of the nation's first nuclear power plant, this region remains a critical player in regional and global affairs.

Bushehr province occupies a significant position in southern Iran, defined by its extensive coastline along the Persian Gulf. Administratively, it is one of 31 provinces, categorized within Region 2 for development coordination since June 2014. The province's history is marked by colonial encounters, most notably the Portuguese invasion in 1506, which lasted until the forces of Shah Abbas Safavi secured the region. Later, during the Safavid era, the Zanganeh tribe migrated from Kermanshah to the area between Ahram and Borazjan, establishing a local government that persisted until the Qajar period.

Today, the province is a cornerstone of Iran's industrial and strategic infrastructure. It hosts the nation's first nuclear power plant, the Bushehr Light water PWR, a facility designed by Siemens and constructed by Russian engineers. Furthermore, the city of Bushehr serves as Iran's second-largest naval port. The province's economic importance is underscored by Kharg Island, which acts as a major terminal for oil exports, handling up to 90 percent of the country's outbound petroleum. These facilities make the province a focal point for national security and economic stability.

The social fabric of Bushehr is predominantly Shia Muslim, though a Sunni minority accounts for 8.5 percent of the population. While Persian, specifically the Fars dialect, is the primary language for most residents, there is also a notable Arabic-speaking minority. The region is not without its vulnerabilities; in April 2013, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Dashti County, resulting in at least 37 fatalities. Despite such challenges, the province continues to grow, with census data showing a steady increase in inhabitants, reaching over 1.16 million people by 2016, with more than 71 percent of the population residing in urban centers.
