In short: Located at the southern tip of Vietnam, Cà Mau is a city defined by its intricate canal network and massive industrial output. Once part of the ancient Kingdom of Funan, this Mekong Delta capital has evolved from a small town into a vital economic engine for the nation's energy and seafood sectors.

Cà Mau serves as the capital of its namesake province, occupying the southernmost reaches of Vietnam's mainland. Historically, the region was part of the Kingdom of Funan before falling under the influence of the Khmer Empire. By 1757, the area—known in Khmer as 'the black land'—was ceded to the Nguyễn lords, marking the beginning of Vietnamese settlement. During the Vietnam War, the surrounding territory became a significant stronghold for the Việt Cộng, eventually leading to the city's modern administrative status as a 2nd class urban area by 2010.

The city's economy is anchored by two distinct pillars: agriculture and heavy industry. It stands as Vietnam's largest exporter of shrimp and prawns, with the province recording $500 million in exports as early as 2005. Complementing this is the Cà Mau Gas-Power-Fertilizer Complex, a $1.4 billion infrastructure project. This facility utilizes gas piped 298 km from the offshore PM3 field to fuel two thermal power plants—boasting a 1500 MW capacity—and a fertilizer plant capable of producing 800,000 metric tonnes of urea annually.

Life in Cà Mau is shaped by its tropical monsoon climate, which dictates the rhythm of the city's canal-based transport system. The wet season, spanning from April to December, brings heavy rainfall, while the brief dry season peaks in February. Beyond its industrial and agricultural output, the region draws visitors to its mangrove forests in the U Minh area and the southernmost point of the country, Mũi Cà Mau. The city remains a cultural mosaic, home to a majority ethnic Vietnamese population alongside Khmer Krom and Hoa households.
