How a desert city became the agricultural heart of the Saudi Kingdom
In short: Buraydah is far more than a stop in the desert. As the capital of the Al-Qassim Province, this city serves as Saudi Arabia's agricultural engine. From hosting the world's largest date market to pioneering UNESCO-recognized gastronomy, Buraydah balances ancient trade traditions with modern, large-scale environmental initiatives.
Located in north-central Saudi Arabia, Buraydah has evolved from a historic hub for camel caravans and horse exports into a modern agricultural powerhouse. Often called the Kingdom's breadbasket, the city is famous for its diverse produce, including strawberries, pomegranates, and figs. Its status as a global center for date cultivation is cemented by its massive market, which remains the largest of its kind worldwide. In 2021, UNESCO acknowledged this cultural and culinary significance by designating Buraydah a Creative City in Gastronomy, making it the first city in the Gulf to earn this distinction.
The city's growth is reflected in its rapid development and infrastructure. With a population exceeding 571,000 as of 2022, Buraydah supports a robust educational ecosystem, anchored by Qassim University, which serves over 70,000 students across 38 colleges. The city is also a focal point for environmental change. Through the Saudi Green Initiative, local authorities and the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification have successfully planted one million trees in the surrounding oasis. This project aims to restore degraded land, protect biodiversity, and reduce carbon emissions in the harsh desert climate.
Beyond its agricultural and academic reach, Buraydah functions as a vital transit node. The city is connected to major urban centers like Riyadh, Medina, and Ha'il via a modern highway network and a railway line operated by SAR. The Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz International Airport further links the region to global destinations including Istanbul and Dubai. Whether through its iconic 40-meter water tower or its expansive camel market, Buraydah stands as a testament to the Kingdom's ability to thrive in a challenging environment while preserving its heritage.
