The Spanish football club that carries the Basque word for strength
In short: In a league dominated by corporate giants, CA Osasuna remains a rare relic of member-owned tradition. Named after the Basque word for health and vigour, this Pamplona-based club has survived wartime repression, political upheaval, and intense regional rivalries to remain a unique force in Spanish football.
Founded on 24 October 1920 by Benjamín Andoian Martínez, Osasuna is the only club in La Liga with a Basque name. The word 'osasuna' translates to health or strength in Basque. Unlike most modern football giants, Osasuna is not a corporation; it is owned and operated by its members, who elect the club's president. In a strict adherence to tradition, the president is prohibited from investing their own money into the club.
The club's history is deeply intertwined with Spain's turbulent 20th-century politics. During the 1936 coup-de-état, the club suffered severe losses, with at least ten players, employees, and board members murdered, imprisoned, or persecuted by Nationalist rebels. Following the conflict, the club's future was shaped by the regime; despite finishing last in the 1935–36 season, they were offered a place in the 1939–40 La Liga due to the strong support for the Nationalists in Navarre, eventually competing in a playoff against Atlético Aviación.
On the pitch, the 'Rojillos' have experienced dramatic highs and lows. Their most successful periods include reaching the Copa del Rey finals in 2005 and 2023, and achieving fourth-place league finishes in 1990–91 and 2005–06. The latter season saw them reach the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase and a historic run in the UEFA Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals in 2006–07 after defeating sides like Bayer Leverkusen. Despite recent match-fixing allegations dating back to 2013, the club was cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to participate in the UEFA Conference League in 2023.
