How a wartime identity crisis gave birth to a footballing legacy

In short: In 1938, a football club faced a choice: field a weakened squad or adopt a new identity. To protect its reputation during the Spanish Civil War, Athletic Bilbao chose the latter, creating a name that would eventually define its professional reserve team for decades to come.

The origins of the name 'Bilbao Athletic' are rooted in the chaos of the Spanish Civil War. In 1938, with La Liga and the Copa del Rey suspended, Athletic's finest players joined the Euzkadi XI to raise funds for the Basque cause. To prevent humiliating losses with a diminished roster, the team played as Bilbao Athletic—a name taken from the 1903 merger that created Athletic Bilbao.

The name was officially revived in 1964 to establish a formal reserve team under coach Agustín Gaínza. Since then, the team has served as a vital pipeline for the club's 'cantera' youth setup, often drawing players from the feeder team, Basconia. Due to Athletic's strict signing policy, the squad is composed exclusively of Basque players.

Operating within the Spanish football pyramid, Bilbao Athletic faces unique regulatory constraints. While they compete in the same league structure as the senior team, they are ineligible for promotion to La Liga or entry into the Copa del Rey. This creates a complex developmental environment where the squad must balance high-level competition with the limitations of their status as a reserve side.

The team's journey has seen significant fluctuations, from reaching the Segunda División in 1969 to a recent relegation to the fourth-tier Segunda Federación in 2022–23. However, they demonstrated immediate resilience by winning their group in 2023–24 to return to the third-tier Primera Federación.
