From industrial chemistry to the UFC's middleweight rankings
In short: Caio Borralho is a Brazilian mixed martial artist who traded a potential career at a brewery giant for the cage. Known as the King of Nerds, he balances a life of high-level combat with a background in mathematics, chemistry, and chess.
Caio Borralho's path to the UFC was not a linear trajectory of professional fighting. Born in São Luís, Maranhão, in 1993, his early life was defined by academic pursuit and diverse martial arts. Inspired by his grandfather, a math teacher, Borralho began tutoring in math and chemistry at just 15 years old. He eventually enrolled at the Universidade Federal do Maranhão to study industrial chemistry, even receiving an internship offer from the brewery giant Ambev.
The pivot occurred in 2014. Driven by a passion for MMA—sparked by films featuring Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan—Borralho dropped out of university. He moved to São Paulo to pursue professional fighting, establishing his own team, Fighting Nerds, with coach Pablo Sucupira. His technical foundation was built early; he began grappling at age six, winning state and national judo championships before transitioning to jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai to refine his skills.
Borralho's professional ascent was marked by persistence. After a 2021 debut on Dana White's Contender Series where he failed to secure a contract, he returned a month later to defeat Jesse Murray via first-round TKO. This victory landed him a UFC spot. Since then, he has compiled a significant run, including a win over former champion Jared Cannonier in August 2024. As of June 2026, he sits at #6 in the middleweight rankings, holding the eighth-longest win streak in the division's history with 7 consecutive wins.
Despite his status as a top-tier athlete, Borralho maintains his intellectual roots. He holds a degree in physical education, teaches martial arts in São Paulo, and is a dedicated chess player. His nickname, "Rei dos Nerds" (King of Nerds), reflects this duality of being a formidable fighter who remains deeply engaged with anime, video games, and strategy.
