How a Brazilian martial artist became a three-time Bellator champion
In short: From watching Bruce Lee movies in Brazil to dominating the cage in Georgia, Douglas Lima's journey is a testament to persistence. After overcoming early career setbacks and injuries, he rose to become a three-time Bellator Welterweight Champion and a Grand Prix winner, proving his elite status in the world of mixed martial arts.
Born in Aparecida de Goiânia, Brazil, in 1988, Douglas Lima's interest in martial arts was sparked by the films of Bruce Lee and Jean-Claude Van Damme. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2000, he began training in Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu at age 14. His professional career saw early volatility, including a loss to Matt Brown in 2007 and a title loss to Brent Weedman in 2008. His initial training included capoeira before he transitioned to more specialised disciplines. He eventually attended Joseph Wheeler High School during his formative years in the United States.
Lima's career is defined by his resilience and his tenure with Bellator Fighting Championships. He secured his first Bellator Welterweight Championship in 2014 by defeating Rick Hawn via TKO. Despite losing his title to Andrey Koreshkov in 2015 after a 15-month injury layoff, Lima reclaimed the belt in 2016 with a third-round knockout. He eventually achieved a third championship reign by winning the 2019 Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix, defeating Rory MacDonald via unanimous decision to claim a $1,000,000 prize. He previously competed for the Maximum Fighting Championship, where he secured a title shot by defeating Jesse Juarez. His victory in the 2019 tournament was particularly notable for its significant financial reward.
Beyond his individual accolades, Lima is a key figure in the combat sports community. He and his brother, Dhiego, operate American Top Team - Team Lima in Duluth, Georgia. While he has attempted to compete in the Middleweight division, his most significant successes have occurred in the Welterweight division. Most recently, Lima has moved on from Bellator to sign with the Global Fight League in early 2025. His recent competitive history includes a loss to Aaron Jeffery in late 2024. He also faced Rinat Fakhretdinov in an ADXC event earlier that same year.
