In short: Calapan is the bustling capital of Oriental Mindoro, but its current location was born of necessity. To survive relentless pirate raids in the mid-18th century, the town center was forced to abandon its original inland home for a more defensible position along the coast of Calapan Bay.

The city's origins are shrouded in mystery, with theories ranging from a name derived from 'Kalap' (gathering logs) to 'Kalapang' (a branch). However, historical records suggest the latter might be more plausible, potentially referring to the settlement as a 'branch' of its mother town, Baco, or describing the specific peninsula that now hosts the city's major seaport and airport. The geography of Calapan has been shaped by both human conflict and natural disaster. In the 1750s, the town's poblacion was relocated from its original inland site at Lumangbayan to the coast to mitigate pirate threats. This coastal positioning later made it a vital maritime hub, eventually hosting the busiest seaport on Mindoro Island. The city became the provincial capital in 1837 after being moved from Puerto Galera. Before this, the town was a small village until a religious district was transferred there in 1733. During the early 1800s, the census recorded nearly 1,000 native families living in the area.

The Port of Calapan now serves as a primary gateway to the region, featuring the largest passenger terminal building in the Philippines. Nature has also left a permanent mark on the city's landscape. On November 15, 2019, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused significant destruction. The disaster was so powerful that it physically altered the local geography, causing the Calauangan River and Lake to expand to its current size of about 1.60 square kilometers as the surge carried a power barge two kilometers upstream and caused shoreline collapse.
