The Cairngorms are a high-altitude arctic-alpine tundra hidden in the Scottish Highlands
In short: Rising above the Scottish landscape, the Cairngorms feature Britain's most dependable snow, unique lichen-rich plateaus, and a semi-domesticated reindeer herd. Despite their name translating to the blue or green hills, these granite mountains are also known as the red hills, glowing warmly under the setting sun in the northern reaches.
The Cairngorms are a massive granite range defined by high plateaus reaching 1,000 to 1,200 meters, with domed summits rising to 1,300 meters. Formed 40 million years before the last ice age, the range was protected from deep glacial erosion by static ice caps, preserving its rounded summits and deep, weathered granite. Today, the area is characterized by periglacial weathering, including free-standing rock outcrops known as tors that were exhumed over the Quaternary period.
The environment is the most arduous in the United Kingdom, featuring a tundra climate that mirrors high-arctic Canada or northern Norway. The weather is notoriously volatile; the Cairngorms have recorded the lowest temperature in the UK at -27.2 °C and the highest wind speed at 176 mph. These conditions support rare wildlife, including ptarmigan and the only reindeer herd in the British Isles, which was reintroduced in 1952. The surrounding glens contain remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest, a vital habitat for the endangered capercaillie and the endemic Scottish crossbill.
Human interaction with the range has evolved from cattle drovers using mountain passes to modern conservation efforts. While the area is a popular destination for skiing, climbing, and hill-walking, it faces significant environmental pressures from tourism, including trampling and erosion. Much of the core mountain area is now managed by conservation bodies like the National Trust for Scotland and the RSPB, reflecting a shift toward protecting this unique, species-poor outlier of Scandinavian heath communities from the impacts of a warming climate.
