In short: The Canadian Premier League is a professional soccer competition that balances national growth with the logistical challenges of a massive country. While it aims to cultivate domestic talent through strict roster quotas, its teams face unique geographic hurdles, including some of the longest away-game travel distances in professional sports.

Established in 2017 and playing its inaugural season in 2019, the Canadian Premier League (CPL) serves as the highest level of the Canadian soccer system. Headquartered in Toronto, the league was formed to provide a professional domestic pathway for Canadian players, a void that had existed since the original Canadian Soccer League closed in 1992. To ensure the development of national talent, the league enforces specific roster requirements, including minimum quotas for Canadian players and mandatory participation for domestic under-21 athletes.

The league operates with eight teams, a structure maintained through a cycle of expansion and contraction. While the CPL has seen the addition of clubs like Atlético Ottawa in 2020 and Vancouver FC in 2023, it has also navigated the folding of franchises such as FC Edmonton and Valour FC. The geographic scale of the league is immense; matches between Pacific FC and the HFX Wanderers require travel across 4,476 kilometres, ranking among the longest away trips in global professional soccer. Conversely, the 905 Derby between Forge FC and Inter Toronto represents the league's shortest distance at 80 kilometres.

Competition within the CPL is defined by two primary honors: the North Star Cup for playoff champions and the CPL Shield for regular-season winners. Both titles provide paths to the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where teams compete for a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite these opportunities, no CPL team has yet secured a domestic double, nor has any club won the Canadian Championship, a separate domestic cup competition. As of 2024, the league was valued at US$300 million, or CA$431 million, as it continues to explore expansion into new markets like Quebec City and Laval.
