Canada's new professional women's soccer league is rewriting the rules of domestic sports
In short: Launched in 2025, the Northern Super League is Canada's first top-division professional women's soccer competition. Born from a grassroots vision to address a lack of domestic development, the league has rapidly expanded, securing major broadcast partnerships and establishing a unique model for club ownership and player pathways across the country.
The Northern Super League (NSL) originated from the advocacy of former professional player Diana Matheson, who identified a critical gap in Canadian player development. Following her retirement in 2021, Matheson pursued an MBA and executive sports training, eventually co-founding Project 8 Sports in 2022 alongside Thomas Gilbert. The league was designed to provide a professional domestic environment, moving away from the reliance on defunct systems like the USL W-League. By December 2022, the project gained momentum with support from stars like Christine Sinclair and initial corporate backing from Air Canada and CIBC.
The league's business model is distinct, requiring franchise fees of $1 million and an expected $10 million investment from owners over the first five seasons. This structure grants owners equity in the league itself, a strategy intended to foster long-term stability. Unlike some established leagues, the NSL intentionally omitted 'women' and 'Canada' from its name to align with the branding of successful global sports organizations. By 2025, the league launched with six founding clubs, including teams in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto, with a seventh team in Winnipeg set to join in 2027.
Operational challenges remain, as clubs primarily utilize shared stadiums where they often hold lower scheduling priority than established tenants. Despite these hurdles, the league has secured significant media reach, including multi-year broadcast deals with Canadian networks and an ESPN partnership to stream at least 40 matches in the United States. The competition structure follows standard international points systems, with a postseason playoff culminating in the Diana B. Matheson Cup. As of 2026, clubs also compete in the W Canadian Championship, offering a pathway to the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, signaling the league's ambition to integrate fully into the international soccer landscape.
