The meteoric rise and rapid collapse of the electric vehicle startup Canoo
In short: Founded in 2017 with grand visions of reinventing the electric van, Canoo promised to transform fleet logistics and even transport NASA astronauts. Yet, despite high-profile partnerships and massive order books, the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in early 2025 with less than $50,000 in remaining assets.
Canoo began in 2017 as Evelozcity, established by former BMW and Deutsche Bank executives Ulrich Kranz and Stefan Krause. The company aimed to disrupt the automotive market with a modular electric vehicle platform, eventually rebranding as Canoo in 2019. Its unique pod-shaped design and promises of subscription-based services initially attracted significant attention, including a potential partnership with Hyundai and interest from Apple for its secretive Titan project. By late 2020, the company went public via a merger with Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, aiming to raise $300 million to fuel its ambitious production goals.
The company's trajectory shifted dramatically as it pivoted between business models, moving from consumer subscriptions to commercial fleet sales. Despite securing large-scale orders from companies like Walmart and Kingbee, and a contract to supply crew transport vehicles for NASA's Artemis program, Canoo struggled to achieve volume production. Frequent executive departures, shifting headquarters between California, Texas, and Arkansas, and investigations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission created a climate of instability. By 2023, the company reported net revenue of only $886,000 after delivering just 22 vehicles, while simultaneously paying significantly higher amounts for private aircraft and shared services.
Financial pressure mounted as the company failed to secure consistent funding. By October 2024, fewer than 12 vehicles had been delivered across all major orders, suggesting these were samples rather than mass-produced units. Following a failed attempt to stabilize operations through asset acquisitions and emergency furloughs, Canoo filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on January 17, 2025. The filing marked the end of the company's operations, with a court-appointed trustee tasked with liquidating its remaining assets to satisfy creditors. In March 2025, CEO Anthony Aquila offered to purchase the company's assets for $4 million, highlighting the stark gap between the startup's initial multi-billion dollar valuation and its final collapse.
