In short: Standing as a sentinel over the treacherous Graveyard of the Atlantic, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a marvel of engineering. After decades of battling encroaching tides and coastal erosion, the massive 5,000-ton masonry structure was famously moved inland in 1999 to save it from collapsing into the sea.

Located on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, the lighthouse serves as a vital beacon where the warm Gulf Stream meets the cold Labrador Current. This collision creates volatile weather and shifting sandbars, earning the surrounding waters the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The current structure, completed in 1871, was designed to guide ships through these dangerous shoals. Standing 208 feet tall, it remains the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, constructed with approximately 1,250,000 bricks.

The lighthouse has faced a constant struggle against the ocean. By 1935, the surf had reached the base of the tower, forcing the light to be moved to a temporary steel skeleton structure nearby. Although natural accretion later allowed the light to return to the brick tower in 1950, the threat of erosion never truly vanished. By 1999, the water was just 15 feet from the foundation, placing the historic landmark in imminent danger of destruction.

The subsequent relocation, dubbed The Move of the Millennium, was a monumental feat of civil engineering. International Chimney Corp. and Expert House Movers successfully transported the 5,000-ton tower 2,900 feet to the southwest. Despite legal challenges and public skepticism regarding the structure's survival, the project was completed on September 14, 1999. Today, the lighthouse sits 1,500 feet from the shoreline, where it continues to operate as an essential aid to navigation while serving as a historic site maintained by the National Park Service.
