The northernmost point of any mainland on Earth

In short: In the desolate reaches of Peary Land, Greenland, lies a headland that defines the northern limit of the mainland. While small islands may sit further north, Cape Morris Jesup stands as a geographic titan, where hardy flora survives in a polar desert and the Arctic and Wandel seas meet.

Located in Johannes V. Jensen Land, Cape Morris Jesup sits approximately 712 kilometers from the geographic North Pole. It serves as a critical geographical boundary, marking the transition where the Lincoln Sea to the west meets the Wandel Sea to the east. The landscape is defined by its harsh, high-latitude environment, situated roughly 20 kilometers east of the Sands Fjord mouth and west of Constable Bay.

The cape's history is tied to the exploration of the early 20th century. On May 13, 1900, explorer Robert Peary reached the site. At the time, he believed it to be the northernmost land point on the planet. While subsequent discoveries found the island of Kaffeklubben to be slightly further north, the cape remains the northernmost point of any mainland on Earth. It was named to honor Morris Ketchum Jesup, a philanthropist and president of the Peary Arctic Club who funded these ambitious expeditions.

Despite the inhospitable conditions of a polar desert with only 30-day summers, the cape hosts a resilient ecosystem. In the thin, rocky soil, two specific species—the Arctic poppy and purple saxifrage—manage to survive. These hardy plants endure and bloom even when summer temperatures hover near the freezing point. This persistence highlights the tenacity of life in one of the world's most extreme environments, just a few kilometers from the delta formed by the Mary Peary Peaks.
