The maritime disaster that earned a cruise ship a notorious nickname
In short: Before she was the Carnival Sunrise, this vessel was the center of a global scandal. A single engine room fire triggered a cascade of mechanical failures and sewage backups, leading the media to brand the ship with a humiliating new title.
In February 2013, the Carnival Triumph—now known as the Carnival Sunrise—suffered a fire in its aft engine room. While the fire was extinguished without direct injuries, the loss of power and propulsion led to a catastrophic failure of shipboard systems. Raw sewage began backing up into passenger areas, creating a significant health hazard and earning the ship the infamous moniker "The Poost Cruise."
Investigations by the U.S. Authorities from the Bahamas Maritime Agency and the Coast Guard disclosed that a breach in a flexible fuel oil return pipe triggered the blaze. from the No. 6 diesel engine. Crucially, maintenance records showed that this specific generator had been overdue for service for more than a year. Furthermore, the ship had experienced nine separate fuel leaks from similar lines in the two years preceding the incident.
The vessel's struggles were not isolated to a single night. Just weeks earlier, propulsion issues had delayed its return to Galveston, Texas, and a Coast Guard inspection in Texas City had identified a high-voltage electrical short. Despite a directive to resolve these deficiencies, the issues remained unaddressed at the time of the fire. This event was part of a broader pattern for the line, following similar engine room fires on the Tropicale, Carnival Splendor, and Costa Allegra.
Following the crisis, Carnival announced a $300 million fleet-wide safety upgrade to install backup generators. The ship eventually underwent a $200 million refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain, in 2019, at which point she was officially renamed the Carnival Sunrise.
