The Mexican star who conquered the MLS with a record-breaking season
In short: From a childhood in Cancún to the bright lights of the Premier League, Carlos Vela’s career has been defined by prolific scoring and sudden, dramatic shifts. After dominating La Liga, he moved to Los Angeles, where he rewrote the record books and became a league icon.
Born in Cancún in 1989, Carlos Vela’s ascent began with a standout performance at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship. After finishing as the tournament's top scorer with five goals, he joined Arsenal in November 2005. However, his time in England was complicated by work permit restrictions for non-EU citizens, leading to several loan spells at Spanish clubs like Salamanca and Osuna.
Vela eventually found his footing in Spain, most notably during a six-year tenure with Real Sociedad. Between 2011 and 2017, he played 250 matches and scored 73 goals for the club, earning a reputation as one of their finest foreign players. His time in La Liga was marked by individual brilliance, including a 20-goal season in 2013–14 and being named La Liga Player of the Month in December 2013.
In 2018, Vela transitioned to Major League Soccer as the first designated player for Los Angeles FC. His impact was immediate and historic; in his second year, he set a new league record by scoring 34 goals in a single season. This prolific run earned him the MLS Golden Boot and the league's Most Valuable Player award. Alongside his individual accolades, he helped lead LAFC to multiple Supporters' Shields and the MLS Cup, cementing his legacy as one of the most impactful players to ever grace the league before his retirement in 2025.
