In short: Spanning 470.8 square kilometers, Chaoyang is Beijing's most populous and largest central district. It serves as the city's primary diplomatic hub, hosting nearly every foreign embassy, and functions as a powerhouse for global commerce, housing thousands of international firms and the headquarters of major Chinese corporate giants.

Chaoyang District acts as the primary interface between Beijing and the global community. Beyond its role as the diplomatic center—where almost all foreign embassies are concentrated in neighborhoods like Ritan, Sanlitun, and Liangmaqiao—the area is a magnet for transnational enterprise. Official data indicates that the district hosts over 60 percent of Beijing's foreign business agencies and more than 3,000 international companies. This includes a significant portion of the global top 500 firms that have established a presence in the capital.

The district's economic footprint is substantial. In 2022, Chaoyang recorded a GDP of 791.12 billion yuan, or approximately $117.62 billion. This wealth is driven by a diverse corporate landscape. The district serves as the base for major national entities, including the CITIC Group, Sinopec, and the parent company of Air China. Furthermore, it is the site of the city's expanding central business district and the Olympic Green, a legacy of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Infrastructure development remains a priority for the municipal and national governments, which invest nearly half a million USD daily into the district. This commitment is visible in the extensive transit network, which includes 16 metro lines. Interestingly, while the Beijing Capital Airport is geographically surrounded by the Shunyi District, it remains an exclave of Chaoyang. The district also houses key national administrative bodies, including the government departments responsible for cultural affairs and foreign relations.

Despite its modern, high-rise profile, Chaoyang maintains a complex administrative structure, overseeing 24 subdistricts, 18 townships, and one ethnic township. With a population reaching 3.42 million by the end of 2025, the area balances its role as a global business gateway with the daily needs of its massive residential base, supported by a wide array of shopping centers, markets, and educational institutions.
