In short: South Korea's first planned city, Changwon, is a masterclass in urban efficiency. Built in the 1970s to anchor the nation's heavy industry, its grid-like layout features a massive central avenue that doubles as an emergency airplane runway. Today, it serves as a global model for integrating industrial might with sustainable living.

Established in 1974, Changwon was modeled after Canberra, Australia, to serve as a strategic industrial and residential hub. The city’s structure is bisected by Changwon Daero, a 15.27-kilometre straight road designed to function as an emergency runway. This foresight extends to the city's infrastructure; underground walkways are built to serve as bomb shelters, and buildings are numbered to facilitate efficient evacuation, reflecting its original design as an emergency backup capital.

The city’s economic engine is the Changwon Industrial Complex, which spans 25.302 square kilometres and hosts over 2,000 tenant companies. It is a cornerstone of the national economy, producing 70% of South Korea’s defense equipment, including the K2 Black Panther tank and K9 Thunder artillery. While dominated by heavy industry, the city has aggressively rebranded as an environmental capital, implementing the Nubija bike-sharing program and ensuring 85% of citizens have access to walking trails.

In 2010, the unification of Changwon with the neighboring cities of Masan and Jinhae created a sprawling urban center with a population of over one million. This merger brought together diverse districts, from the historic art-filled streets of the Changdong Art Village—once a bustling old town—to the modern commercial nightlife of the Sangnam district. Despite a socioeconomic divide between the older east and modern west, the city remains a cultural focal point, hosting the annual K-Pop World Festival and the Jinhae Gunhangje cherry blossom event.
