In short: The Chengdu WZ-10 is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle designed for precision strikes and reconnaissance. Beyond its military capabilities, this stealth-capable platform has been repurposed by meteorologists to monitor typhoon movements, demonstrating a unique dual-use role that spans from the battlefield to the skies above the East China Sea.

Developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, the WZ-10 series—also known as the Wing Loong-10—has evolved through several iterations since its origins as the Sky Wing III prototype in 2007. The platform is built using composite materials for its wings, fuselage, and tail, with a design intended to minimize its radar cross-section. The aircraft features a bulbous nose that tapers toward the rear, where an air scoop is positioned along the dorsal line.

The platform exists in two primary configurations: the domestic Wind Shadow, used by the People's Liberation Army Air Force, and the export-oriented Cloud Shadow. The Wind Shadow is distinguished by its twin-engine, turbofan-powered design, which includes stealth-concealed nozzles and a deceleration parachute. In contrast, the Cloud Shadow typically utilizes a single turbojet engine. Both versions are designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, as well as combat roles, with six hardpoints capable of carrying payloads such as GPS-guided bombs and air-to-surface missiles.

Operational flexibility is a core feature of the system. A standard Wind Shadow setup includes three drones linked to a single ground control station, allowing for autonomous flight or manual operation via data links. Beyond its military utility, the platform has found civilian application; in 2018, the China Meteorological Administration began using the drone to track typhoons. By 2024, the aircraft was observed conducting flights over the East China Sea, highlighting its ongoing role in regional monitoring and strategic operations.
