In short: Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, designed to resemble the city's mythical Sunbird logo, is a colossal infrastructure project. Opened in 2021 to relieve the overburdened Shuangliu Airport, it is already one of the world's busiest hubs, serving as a critical gateway for international travel and cargo in Southwestern China.

Located 51 km southeast of downtown Chengdu in Jianyang, the airport represents a long-term strategic vision that began with initial planning in 2007. By 2013, the site was officially confirmed, and construction commenced in 2016. The facility is a masterpiece of modern logistics, featuring two terminals that mirror each other, with six arms radiating from a central circular core. This design is not merely aesthetic; it is built for massive scale, with current operations utilizing three runways and two terminals, and a long-term master plan that envisions a total of six runways and four terminals.

The airport's capacity is set to reach 60 million passengers annually by 2025, with an ultimate goal of 90 million. It serves as a primary base for Air China, which maintains extensive facilities on-site, including a 1,500-bed staff hostel. The transition of international routes from the older Shuangliu Airport to Tianfu was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the shift becoming largely effective by March 2023. This dual-airport system makes Chengdu the third city in China to manage such complex aviation infrastructure, following Beijing and Shanghai.

Connectivity is a cornerstone of the airport's utility. It is linked to the city via the Chengdu Metro Line 18, which provides express service, and a high-speed rail station that opened in December 2023. Furthermore, the airport facilitates international tourism through a 240-hour visa-free transit policy for citizens of 54 countries. As the facility continues to expand—with a third terminal and runway scheduled for operation by October 2026—it cements Chengdu's status as a pivotal node in the global aviation network.
