In short: Founded in 1916 as a modest church-run kindergarten, Chung-Ang University survived war, financial ruin, and foreign occupation to emerge as a premier research institution. Today, this Seoul-based university is a leader in fields ranging from law to performing arts, symbolized by the blue dragon that watches over its campus.

The origins of Chung-Ang University trace back to 1916, when it began as a kindergarten annex to the Chung-Ang Methodist Church in Seoul. By 1922, it had evolved into a training school for female kindergarten teachers. The institution faced severe instability during the early 20th century, nearly collapsing in 1932 when it was forced to operate out of a private residence with only ten students. Its trajectory shifted dramatically in 1933 when Louise Yim assumed leadership. Yim, who had saved US$30,000 from various jobs in the United States, purchased the land in Heukseok-dong that remains the university's heart today.

The university's history is inextricably linked to the turbulent political climate of 20th-century Korea. During World War II, the institution was targeted by Japanese forces due to Yim's American education and Christian faith, eventually forcing its closure in 1944. Following liberation, Yim reopened the school in 1945, and it was granted official university status in 1953. Even the Korean War could not stop its progress; while the campus was occupied by the U.S. Army, the university continued to operate from temporary facilities in Busan before reclaiming its Seoul site in 1954.

In the modern era, the university has undergone aggressive expansion and restructuring. In 2008, the Doosan Group became the university's educational foundation, ushering in a new strategic era focused on research and global competitiveness. This period saw massive investment, including the completion of the nation's largest Law Hall in 2007 and the launch of the CAU2018+ development plan. Today, the university operates across campuses in Seoul and Anseong, maintaining a diverse academic portfolio that includes everything from traditional liberal arts to competitive video game science, all while upholding its legacy as a center for professional and graduate education.
