How a Spanish studio redefined the mechanics of stealth and tactics
In short: Before the modern era of tactical shooters, a Spanish developer crafted a series that turned the chaos of World War II into a high-stakes game of chess. By prioritizing stealth and real-time tactics over raw action, Commandos forced players to think like elite operatives, not just soldiers.
Developed by Pyro Studios and published by Eidos Interactive, the Commandos series debuted in 1998 with 'Behind Enemy Lines.' Unlike the fast-paced shooters that would later dominate the market, this series focused on an isometric view where players managed a fictional Allied commando unit. Each mission was loosely inspired by historical World War II events, requiring players to navigate complex environments using stealth and specific character skills to achieve multiple objectives.
The series underwent significant technical evolution. While the first game established the tactical foundation, the 2001 sequel introduced a 3D engine and more interactive environments, drawing heavy inspiration from war films like 'Saving Private Ryan.' By 2003, the third installment allowed for a rotatable 3D vantage point. However, the series faced a major identity crisis with the 2006 release of 'Strike Force.' This entry shifted to a first-person perspective and action-oriented gameplay, which critics and long-time fans largely panned for reducing the trademark difficulty and moving away from the series' core strategy.
The legacy of the franchise is preserved through both official remasters and community-driven projects. After Kalypso Media acquired the rights, they released HD remasters of the second and third games in 2020 and 2022. Meanwhile, the community has kept the original spirit alive through mods like 'Commandos 2: Destination Paris,' which adds over 100 missions to the base game. The human story behind the code was recently documented in a 2021 Spanish book detailing the turbulent journey of Pyro Studios and their partnership with Eidos.
