In short: Yonsei University stands as a cornerstone of South Korean academia, forming one-third of the prestigious SKY university group. Born from the 1957 merger of a pioneering medical center and a Christian college, it balances its missionary roots with a modern, highly competitive academic environment that shapes the nation's future leaders.

The origins of Yonsei University are deeply intertwined with the introduction of Western medicine to Korea. In April 1885, American missionary Horace Newton Allen established Gwanghyewon, the first modern hospital in the country. This institution, later renamed Severance Hospital after benefactor Louis Severance, became a hub for medical education. By 1913, it was formally recognized as Severance Union Medical College, a testament to the collaborative efforts of various missionary denominations.

Parallel to these medical advancements, Horace Grant Underwood founded Chosun Christian College in 1915. Despite facing intense pressure during the Japanese occupation—which included strict regulations on curriculum, the forced adoption of Shinto, and the censorship of English texts—the institution persisted. It was eventually recognized as a university in 1946. The path to its current form was fraught with challenges, including the displacement of faculty and students during the Korean War, when the institution was forced to relocate to Busan and operate as a wartime college.

In 1957, the formal union of Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College created the modern Yonsei University. Today, the institution is defined by its rigorous academic standards, with admission rates for early entry falling below 1%. As a member of the elite SKY group, alongside Seoul National University and Korea University, Yonsei is widely perceived as a primary determinant of career trajectory and social status within South Korea.

While Yonsei maintains its Christian identity, reflected in its motto 'The truth will set you free' and its historical chapel requirements, it has evolved into a diverse research university. It now hosts over 18,000 undergraduates and maintains a global presence, consistently ranking among the top institutions in Asia. The university continues to foster a unique campus culture, blending traditional values with innovative programs like the Global Management Track and various student-led societies.
