Canada's largest cinema chain is currently exploring a potential sale of the company
In short: Cineplex, the dominant force in Canadian cinema, is navigating a new chapter. After surviving a collapsed multibillion-dollar acquisition by Cineworld and the challenges of the pandemic, the company is now under new leadership and evaluating strategic alternatives that could lead to a full sale of the business.
Founded in 2003 through the merger of Loews Cineplex's Canadian assets and Galaxy Entertainment, Cineplex has spent two decades consolidating the Canadian film exhibition market. Through a series of aggressive acquisitions—including Famous Players in 2005, Empire Theatres in 2013, and various AMC locations—the company grew to control 75% of the domestic box office by 2019. Today, it operates 158 theatres under a diverse portfolio of banners, ranging from its flagship Scotiabank Theatre locations to the entertainment-focused Cineplex Junxion.
The company's history is marked by volatile shifts in ownership and strategy. In 2019, British exhibitor Cineworld agreed to purchase Cineplex for CDN$2.8 billion, a deal intended to create a North American giant. However, the agreement collapsed in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A subsequent legal battle resulted in a court order for Cineworld to pay US$1 billion in damages, but Cineplex never collected due to Cineworld’s own Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. This financial setback forced Cineplex to divest assets, including its Cineplex Store and digital media divisions, in 2025.
Under the leadership of new CEO Bill Walker, appointed in September 2026, the company is now reassessing its future. With advisors like Goldman Sachs and TD Securities, the board is exploring whether the company's current market valuation accurately reflects its long-term prospects. While Cineplex has successfully pivoted toward premium experiences—such as VIP Cinemas with in-seat dining and large-format IMAX screens—the industry remains highly competitive. Whether this review leads to a private equity buyout, a merger with another major exhibitor, or a new standalone strategy remains the central question for the company's next phase.
