The Rise and Final Liquidation of North America's Oldest Retail Institution
In short: Hudson's Bay, the flagship brand of North America's oldest company, defined Canadian retail for over a century. From its origins in the fur trade to its transformation into a high-end department store chain, the brand eventually succumbed to financial pressures, closing all its physical locations by June 2025.
The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) originated as a fur trade entity, but shifted toward retail as the fur trade declined in the late 19th century. Following the 1870 transfer of Rupert's Land to Canada, the company opened its first store in 1881 in Winnipeg. By 1913, under the influence of Harrods, HBC launched a modernization program that established flagship department stores in major cities across Western Canada. The brand expanded nationally throughout the 20th century by acquiring established chains like Morgan's, Simpsons, and Woodward's.
In the 21st century, the company pivoted toward luxury fashion, notably through the expansion of 'The Room'—a high-end boutique featuring designers like Balmain and Giorgio Armani. Despite successes like the 2010 Winter Olympics campaign, the retailer faced mounting challenges from online shopping and the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2020, CEO Richard A. Baker began a strategy focused on consolidating power and liquidating real estate assets. These pressures culminated in a March 2025 filing for creditor protection, as the company struggled with $950 million in debt owed to nearly 1,900 creditors.
The final collapse was swift. Although HBC initially hoped to keep six flagship stores open, court rulings deemed the prospect of finding a buyer for the remaining assets unlikely. By 1 June 2025, all Hudson's Bay stores were permanently closed, resulting in the layoff of over 8,000 employees. Canadian Tire subsequently acquired the company's intellectual property, including the iconic stripes and coat of arms, for $30 million. While the physical stores have vanished, the brand's legacy persists through the continued marketing of its historic point blankets.
