In short: Formed in Cambridge in 2008, Clean Bandit rose from university halls to global stardom. By mixing classical compositions from masters like Mozart with modern electronic pop, they have secured multiple UK number-one singles and millions of sales worldwide, proving that sophisticated orchestration and dancefloor rhythms can coexist perfectly.

The group's origins trace back to Jesus College, University of Cambridge, where Grace Chatto and Jack Patterson met as undergraduates. Their unique sound began when Jack started sampling recordings from The Chatto Quartet, a classical string quartet led by violinist Neil Amin-Smith. This fusion of high-art instrumentation and electronic production became the band's signature, eventually leading to a global presence.

The band's commercial breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the single "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne. The track was a massive success, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and topping charts in six other countries. Since 1996, no January release had sold more rapidly, and the track finished 2014 as the UK's runner-up for best-selling song, with sales exceeding 1.13 million copies. The track even earned the group a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in February 2015.

Clean Bandit's lineup has evolved over time. While the core group has included Grace Chatto, Jack Patterson, and Luke Patterson, the departure of violinist Neil Amin-Smith in October 2016 marked a transition to a three-piece. Even with these changes, the group kept their strong momentum, having moved upwards of 13 million singles and 1.6 million albums globally by 2016. Their discography is marked by frequent collaborations with diverse guest vocalists, ranging from Demi Lovato to Anne-Marie.

The band's name itself carries a linguistic quirk. It is a translation of a Russian phrase that, while similar to the English "complete bastard," is intended by Jack Patterson to be a more affectionate term, akin to "utter rascal."
