The Roman capital that survived the fall of empires
In short: Long before London rose to prominence, Colchester stood as the first major city in Roman Britain. From a Celtic power centre to a massive Roman colony, its layers of history reveal a settlement that has endured through invasions, plagues, and siebs for over two millennia.
Colchester’s origins lie in the Celtic settlement of Camulodunon, a centre of power for the king Cunobelin, who ruled the Catuvellauni between approximately 5 BC and AD 40. The name itself likely means 'the fortress of the war god Camulos'. Following the Roman conquest in AD 43, the site was transformed into a legionary fortress and eventually became the province's first capital, known as Colonia Victricensis. This era left a massive architectural footprint, including the largest classical-style temple in Britain and a Roman theatre at Gosbecks capable of seating 5,000 people.
The city's resilience was tested by extreme violence and natural disasters. During the Boudican rebellion in AD 61, the town was attacked and destroyed, leading the Romans to rebuild it with massive walls. Centuries later, the town faced the Siege of Colchester in 1648 during the Second English Civil War, where Parliamentary forces surrounded the town for eleven and a half weeks. Even the 17th century brought tragedy; during the Great Plague of 1665, the town lost 5,259 people, a loss Daniel Defoe noted was more proportional than that of London.
Beyond its military and political importance, Colchester has been a hub of industry and migration. In the 16th century, Flemish weavers fleeing religious upheaval settled in the 'Dutch Quarter', bringing innovations that made the town a premier centre for the woollen cloth trade. This economic vitality helped the population recover from the Black Death and allowed the town to climb the ranks of England's wealthiest boroughs. Today, the city remains a significant population centre in Essex, with over 130,000 residents recorded in the 2021 census.
