In short: Spanning 130,000 square miles, the Colorado Plateau is a rugged landscape of deep gorges and soaring cliffs. From the depths of the Grand Canyon to the peaks of the La Sal Mountains, this vast region is a masterclass in the power of erosion and geological history.

Occupying the Four Corners region of the American Southwest, the Colorado Plateau is a massive physiographic province. It stretches across the southeastern half of Utah, the northern half of Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and parts of western Colorado. This high-desert terrain is defined by a dramatic range of elevations, plummeting from 2,000 feet in the Grand Canyon to over 12,700 feet in Utah's La Sal Mountains.

The landscape is a complex tapestry of geological features. While much of the area is characterized by high mountains and deep river canyons, it also contains shallow basins, sunken deserts, and mesas. Erosion has played a central role in shaping the region, particularly through the Colorado River system, which has sliced through the earth to create brilliantly colored gorges. This process has left behind iconic formations such as hoodoos, fins, natural bridges, and slot canyons.

Hydrology is a defining characteristic of the province. Approximately 90% of the plateau's surface is drained by the Colorado River and its primary tributaries, including the Green, San Juan, and Little Colorado rivers. The remaining areas are largely serviced by the Rio Grande and its various branches.

Today, the region is a hub for conservation. It holds the highest concentration of National Park Service units in the United States outside of the Washington, D.C. area. This includes nine national parks—such as Zion, Arches, and the Grand Canyon—alongside numerous national monuments and protected lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
